We all know what the economy is like right now and how fierce the competition is for finding new jobs. Having a well-written resume will get you noticed but isn’t always enough. Having a well-targeted resume will get you notice and get you an interview! Remember to keep in mind that a resume is as an advertisement, commercial, or flyer with one goal in mind - to gets results and get you an interview. So use it the way it is meant to be used by having one focus and making it powerful and attention-grabbing.

Most job seekers want to use a generic resume as a bit of a one-size-fits-all resume and try and squeeze in 20 or 30 years of experience into 2 pages. Job seekers also think they can use one resume for 2 or 3 jobs searches and that by putting in every important thing they’ve ever done in their career is the best way to get notice. Usually they couldn’t be further from the truth. A resume that works and does its’ job, is one that is well written and focused on one specific job or position. Hopefully this article will help you realize the importance of having a well-targeted resume and its benefits. (more…)

Employers looking for new employees to join their team, department or company are usually past the point of needing additional help by the time you send your resume to their facilities. Resources had to be allocated and budgets approved, job descriptions had to be developed, placement services have been notified, and even physical space in many cases, within the company’s building had to be made available for the addition of employees. Responsibility for bringing a job seeker on board with the company lies with the hiring manager. The manager wants to look good, wants to make the company money, and doesn’t want to take the blame or have to repeat the process all over again because of a poor hiring decision. So s/he is working hard to make sure the top contenders have the qualifications and are the right fit for the company’s goals and culture, before making the final decision. The job seeker as well doesn’t want to invest the time; energy or expenses participating in numerous interviews only to find out the companies are not what s/he is looking for. Time is money for the candidate; every day unemployed is putting her/him further behind financially. Even if they are still working, their current job is holding the candidate back from fulfilling her/his career dream.Â

Throughout your professional life your career, experience and achievements all progress and grow. With time come additional experience, skill development and the achieving of new accomplishments. As a result your resume documents can become outdated and less effective. Your resume is a reflection of your professional life’s work. It provides a snap shot of what you have done thus far, and what and how you can be a benefit to other companies. It can be an awesome marketing tool or a document busy hiring managers might not even read.Â

Each new position you obtain builds further strengths, skills, knowledge and wisdom for you to capture and include on your growing resume. Just looking at the technological experience and advancements most job seekers have available to share with new employers is astounding compared to what we knew only ten years ago. To include the latest position on their resume, job seekers often create a set of bullets to highlight the significant points to share about a recent position and think that their resume is ready for their next job search. This process might be effective once or maybe even twice but adding additional positions without working on the strength of the rest of the resume only weakens the effectiveness of the document.Â
