If You’re Not in the Top 15% of Producers in Your Industry
By paulmccord on Sep 17, 2007 in Featured, Sales Training
Studies have shown that only about 15% of all salespeople earn a superior income (based on the average income for their industry).
Why do so few excel in sales? A better question: how can you get to that level?Â
Top producers didn’t get there by accident. They have worked hard to do the things that generate results. Â
In a sense, becoming a top producer isn’t that difficult. Simply create the internal belief system that will allow you to become a top producer and then do those things that will make you successful.
Easy. Yet, one of the hardest things to do in sales as evidenced by the other 85% who have not figured out how to do it.Â
Success doesn’t come from outside motivation. External motivation doesn’t last. Nor does it come from luck, or being technically proficient at your job, or from working hard, or from “attracting†success. Â
There are tens of thousand of “lucky†people who fail at sales. Likewise, there are tens of thousands who are technically top of the line in their industry who fail; others who work 50, 60, or 70 hours a week and fail; and a great many trying to attract money and success who simply attract a pink slip.Â
Being a great technician is a tremendous asset—if you sell enough to apply your knowledge. Working hard is a basic requirement of success—if your work consists of doing the right things to be successful. Your deepest held beliefs about your capabilities determine whether you can be successful, but your thoughts alone will attract nothing but an unemployment check.Â
Success in sales comes from:Â
·   knowing what to do and then doing a great deal of it.Â
·   focusing your time doing those things that produce results, not those things that make
      you feel good.
·   an internal desire and commitment, an overwhelming need to be successful.
·   creating the internal belief system that will allow you to succeed
·   having a plan that will take you from where you are to where you want to be.Â
Sales success is a combination of psychology and your actions. It is more focused on your foundation than your interaction with your prospect and client. Obviously, your interactions with your prospects and clients are important, but that is the easy part of selling. Your internal and external foundation are the building blocks of success.
