What Defines A Great Sales Manager?

There is no doubt that a position in sales management can be a challenging one. After all, managing a group of people is hard enough, but managing a group of enthusiastic self starters can be even more difficult. Every salesperson has his or her own idea about the best way to go about things, and getting everyone on the same page can be frustratingly difficult at times.

That is what makes the sales management position such a critical one in any organization. The sales department can make or break the organization, and it is critical for every business owner to look carefully for the best candidate to fill the sales management position. The ideal sales manager should be as enthusiastic and independent minded as the others in the sales force, but he or she needs to display additional leadership qualities as well.

Managing a group of successful sales professionals takes a lot of hard work, and it requires an individual with real savvy and a real ability to think on his or her feet. The individual chosen will also need to be comfortable working in a fast paced and ever changing environment.

In some ways hiring an individual to fill a sales management position is just like filling any other job, and it is important to look for candidates with a strong work background, an exceptional work ethic and plenty of relevant knowledge and experience. In addition, however, it is critical that the candidate chosen be a real people person, able to handle difficult situations and difficult people with ease. While there are exceptions to every rule, in most cases the sales manager will need to have a strong personality and an outgoing manner. After all he or she will need to deal with a team of unique individuals in order to get the most out of each member of the team.

The sales manager will also need the ability to be a coach and a mentor to those salespeople who are not performing up to their true potential. In any sales environment there will be those who stand out and those who fall behind, and it will be the job of the sales manager to identify those who have fallen behind and help them achieve their goals. Being a coach and a mentor may not be part of the job description, but it is very much one of the central roles of the successful sales manager.
