If you are about to start a new job, the first thing to do is understand just what it is that you boss is trying to achieve in his or her career and how they think they will get there. Ask them these questions as well as asking them where you fit into their plans.
Then set about delivering for them and in the process, you will find yourself becoming the next bright-eyed boy or girl.
But never make Samantha’s mistake and simply make promises you do not intend to deliver on, or the words “You’re Hired” will quickly turn into the words “You’re Fired” beginning of the end for you.
Here aere some things you can do to improve your prospects:
- Ask your boss what their goals are and how his or her superiors manage his or her performance.
- Directly communicate your intention to make your boss look good and to help your boss to achieve his or her goals.
- Manage upwards by letting your boss know what your successes are and what challenges you face - ahead of time.
- Ask your boss to communicate your successes to his or her superiors.
- Never do anything to make your boss look bad in public…especially to company management.
- Always take the opportunity to make your boss look good in public…especially to company management.
You can avoid Samantha’s fate by following the above steps and working towards a truely collaborative relationship with your boss.
